Tractor Driving – Novice Operators (LANTRA Awards)

A three‑day LANTRA‑accredited course providing novice operators with the skills, confidence, and competence to operate tractors safely in land‑based and worksite environments.

Description

LANTRA logoCompetent tractor operation requires time, practice, and a clear understanding of how power, weight, and terrain interact.

This three-day LANTRA Awards course provides structured, practical training for novice operators with little or no previous tractor experience. It is designed to build safe operating habits from the outset, developing confidence and competence through progressive, supervised training.

Course overview

Tractors are core machines across agriculture, estates, grounds maintenance, and land‑based operations. Their versatility and power make them highly effective, but they also present significant risks when operated without appropriate training, particularly for inexperienced users.

This course develops safe, competent tractor operation through a comprehensive programme combining safety awareness, risk assessment, and extensive hands‑on driving practice. Delegates are introduced to tractor components, controls, and safety systems before progressing to manoeuvring, driving, and basic operational tasks.

Training focuses on building core skills step‑by‑step, including safe mounting and dismounting, starting and stopping procedures, forward and reverse driving, steering and braking control, and working safely on varied ground conditions. Emphasis is placed on understanding stability, traction, and the increased risks associated with slopes, obstacles, and restricted areas.

The extended duration allows learners to consolidate skills at an appropriate pace, ensuring techniques are embedded safely and consistently. Successful completion leads to a LANTRA Certificate of Competence, providing formal recognition of operator capability.

Key benefits

  • Develop safe tractor operating skills from the ground up
  • Build confidence through supervised, progressive practical training
  • Reduce the risk of incidents associated with inexperience and loss of control
