Coppicing – Theory and Practice

This one-day course teaches you the fundamental theory and practice of coppicing. Join us for a morning of exploration and an afternoon of working on a section of woodland being coppiced as part of a broader woodland management plan. 
No experience is necessary.

Panshanger Park (near Hertford), Hertfordshire. SG14 2NA
Panshanger Park is a grade II historic park and garden with landscapes designed by Humphry Repton and ‘Capability’ Brown.  It is rich in history and woodland diversity, making it the perfect place to study and practice coppicing.

Who should attend?

Is anyone interested in learning about coppicing and keen to try this ancient craft?  This might include volunteer conservation workers, private woodland owners, woodland professionals including contractors and agents, land managers or people simply interested in learning a new skill.

Course explained:

In the first part of the day, we will explore the origins of coppicing and how it became an essential part of rural life.  This will include aspects of coppice ecology, the basic principles of coppice working, coppice products and the current national position of coppicing.  
The second part of the day will be a practical session. Following a comprehensive safety induction, all learners will be able to practice what they have learnt in the morning and help coppice an area of woodland.
