Introduction to tree surveying
This 1-day course has been designed to build an understanding of how and why trees are surveyed. The training is designed for candidates working across different sectors and industries, and at different levels. This course aims to expand candidates’ tree surveying knowledge from a basic level to a point where they are confident in identifying potential risks posed by trees.
Who should attend?
This course is aimed at people who work with and/or are responsible for others or the public in the outdoor environment. If you have a passion for trees, or looking to prepare for your LANTRA Professional Tree Inspection (PTI) course.
Aims of the course To gain an understanding the responsibilities of owning trees; To gain an understanding of the potential risk trees can cause; To gain an understanding of the knowledge required to progress onto formal tree inspection qualifications.
What will you learn?
By the end of the course delegates will:
- Understand why trees require surveying and the different types of surveys
- Be aware of the legal aspects of tree ownership and inspection
- Use a key or guide to correctly identify tree species
- Have a basic understanding of timber characteristics
- Recognise basic mechanical features of a trees structure
- Use a comprehensive tree survey methodology
- Understand the different types of rot that impact wood
- Correctly identify common species of fungi that have a negative impact on tree structure and condition
- Identify common hazards in trees and understand the risks they present
- Identify suitable and appropriate remedial action and understand how the tree will react
- Gain basic knowledge of equipment used for advanced decay detection
- Know when to seek more experienced assistance
- Know what a Professional Tree Inspection (PTI) assessment involves

The instructor
The course is run by Dave McGown, a qualified instructor who is an active Arboricultural contracts manager with many years’ experience in both surveying and working with trees.
The facilities
- Courses are held at our offices outside Windsor and Hitchin.
- Both locations are in rural locations but within 5 miles of train stations and have plenty of parking.
- Tea and coffee will be available during the day. There will be a break for you to eat your own lunch.
- If you have more than 6 people to train, we can come to your own venue.
