Ecological awareness is a crucial component of project management and the need for this is embedded in legislation and conservation of biodiversity. This one-day course has been designed to build awareness of ecological constraints relating to designated sites, habitats and species that may be implicated by site projects.

Who should attend?

This LANTRA approved course has been designed to build ecological awareness of personnel working across different sectors and industries. Our everyday working activities can have impacts on the habitats and wildlife around us, and so this course aims to create awareness of what steps need to be taken to allow us to continue with our work with the least impact and in compliance with legislation.

Aims of the course

  • To provide a baseline understanding of the subject to become more conversant with ecological legislation and best practice;
  • To develop knowledge in how biodiversity can be safeguarded and incorporated into projects;
  • To encourage engagement in ecological awareness across all projects in all sectors.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course delegates will:

  • Gain an awareness of protected species and what type of habitats they may be found in, including bats, birds, dormice, reptile, great crested newt, badger, water vole and otter.
  • Understand how humans fit in our ecosystems.
  • Develop an understanding of the legislation afforded to species and habitats.
  • Understand how our working activities can result in impacts to species and habitats and what the repercussion are if done wrong.
  • Gain an understanding of when ecology surveys might be required and when we need to seek advice from an ecologist.
  • Know the importance of hedges and hedgerows.
  • Understand the type of measures required to reduce impacts to wildlife and how we may need to adapt our activities to comply with legislation and best practice

How will you benefit?

  • Potential cost and time saving by ensuring surveys and mitigation measures are incorporated at project commencement rather than at a later stage;
  • Reduce risk of breaches of legislation;
  • Engage and motivate teams by enhancing their environmental knowledge.

What will you receive?

All delegates will be issued with a workbook and a LANTRA certificate of attendance upon completion of this Ecology Awareness Course.
